Big Sleeves...Big Hair

Thursday, 2 April 2015

It's a good job I saved this dress for today. If I'd worn it earlier in the week there's a distinct chance I'd have taken off and been blown across the Irish Sea.

There is a lot of fabric in these sleeves. If a gust of wind had caught them in the wrong direction, I reckon I'd have been rapidly transformed into a well-dressed kite.

It's excellent fun to wear though. I feel very dramatic.

It barely needs any embellishments either. I've tried wearing a cardigan over it and well, that turned into a giant tangle of fabric. Luckily the dress fabric is a really nice thick jersey so it's lovely and warm just by itself. If I need extra warmth I can always tuck myself up in the sleeves!

An Outfit Post Abroad

Friday, 23 September 2011

I do sometimes think it would be lovely to live in a permanently warm climate. Then I go on holiday, come back with painfully sunburnt upper thighs (remembered to apply suntan lotion everywhere but there) and remember that I actually don't cope that well with dressing properly in hot weather. It would be impossible for me to look even halfway presentable - I'd always be sweaty, covered in suntan lotion or sand or have my hair tied back up so it didn't annoy me. I'm much safer in the UK.

That's a long winded way of explaining why there aren't very many pics of me on holiday wearing anything very nice. I managed a few though:

Please ignore my matronly upper arms. They only ever see the light of day on holiday.

I should take all my blog photos in cloisters.

Or on cathedral roofs.

Beachfront ones are more tricky though. It was so windy this night (hence the scragged back hair) and I kept getting blown off balance whilst trying to stand still and have my photo taken.

And despite the fact that this is a total out-take shot (I should have a special folder entitled Alex Arses Up The Self-Timer), I am showing it to you because...duh duh duh... I found some green trousers! Aren't they quite fantastically green? Expect a proper outfit post featuring them soon.

(Pa demanded credit for his photography so here goes - thanks Dad! Awesome holiday companion that you are.)

Impractical Work Wear Part 978

Monday, 11 July 2011

This frock can look fairly normal. Crazy print, obviously, but otherwise quite normal.

Then I move my arms:

SLEEVES!

Fun eh? Wildly impractical for work/washing up/going to the loo etc but definitely fun. And I'm learning new sleeve slinging tricks by the minute. As I type this they're currently thrown back around my elbows like some eighteenth century lady pushing her ruffles back to write a letter. Earlier I twisted them round and shoved them under my armpits. Classy, moi?

Do excuse the gratuitous boob shot - it's the only decent closeup of the fabric. And yes, it is safety pinned together. Entirely too revealing otherwise.

Dress - Pearl Lowe @ Peacocks, sale
Shoes & ring & probably earrings too - Dorothy Perkins
Sunnies - Marks & Spencer

This is the first and probably only Pearl Lowe frock I've bought. It's not her designs I have a problem with, it's the awful shoddy fabric that the dresses are all made out of. This is a lovely jersey fabric but all the others look like Primark's absolute worst and I have no wish whatsoever to buy stuff that looks so cheap and nasty. I like this one though. Obviously, seeing as I bought it...
