This shelf in Marks & Spencer worries me greatly. I'm all for a bit of convenience food every now and then but other than the lemons, you tell me what on this shelf of "Pancake Day Essentials" is actually essential? Who needs pre-made batter? Who needs pre-made pancakes?! For flips sake, who doesn't know how to make pancakes in the first place?!
It's not hard. Four ingredients: milk, eggs, flour and a pinch of salt.
Whisk:
Get a ladle and some sort of flipping implement (no tossing for me):
Put in a pan and cook:
Whack on some sugar and lemon juice:
Admire, then scoff:
You may wish to try some more interesting fillings than sugar and lemon but what can I say. I like mine classic! Although I did try a plain one with some chopped up marshmallows in and it was gooeytastic and rather good. Baking Mad has got tons of delicious looking Pancake Day recipes if you're more adventurous than I am and want to try something a little different.
They've also very kindly offered up a copy of The Big Book of Bread as a giveaway prize and it looks amazing! Chockfull of recipes for all sorts of delicious breads, cakes and muffins.
If you'd like to be in with a chance to win it, just let me know your favourite pancake filling in a comment below. I'll draw the winner at 9am on Mon 18th February.
That's the recipe I'll be using on Tuesday, less the salt. It makes perfect pancakes every time!
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean about the range of "essentials" advertised for pancake day, crazy stuff! I'm a lemon and sugar girlie too, my children however have all sorts, nutella with raisins and apricots is probably their favourite (bleugh!)
ReplyDeleteI think my favourite filling is nutella and banana. Very indulgent in my mind.
ReplyDeletei don't have a batter recipe, its just eggs, some flour and a splash of milk. i don't put salt in pancake batter (i do if its for yorkies). i remember a friend at school complaining her recipe didn't work well, me and my best chu7m were shocked at the idea of following a recipe for batter! personally i put cheese in my pancakes (or dairylea triangles) and a twirl or flake in one for pudding!
ReplyDeleteI saw a box of premade pancake mix that was 'just add eggs and milk' uhmm?!
ReplyDeleteI'm also a classic lemon and sugar girl, but I do like the sound of a marshmallow goo-fest.
I'm a lemon and sugar kinda gal. Although we did used to make pancake canelloni with our pancakes sometimes, which was amazing and filled with spinach and cheese :)
ReplyDeleteYeah! Thanks for the pancakeday reminder!
ReplyDeleteArgh, so excited for my pancakes tomorrow!! Favourite filling has to be Nutella - no contest!
ReplyDeleteOh pancakes, lovely lovely pancakes.
ReplyDeleteI tend to start with the classic lemon and sugar, then work up to my favourite, cherry jam and ice cream. Yum.
It's great to stuff your face with pancakes, and like you say easy to make.

No one buys actual ingredients from M&S do they? I thought the food hall existed only to purvey pre-made food people could lie was their own on date nights haha.
ReplyDeleteMy favourite pancake filling is cinnamon sugar, sometimes with cooked apple dumped on too, yum!
ReplyDeleteI think the supermarket can make lots more money from these gimmicks than they will from eggs, flour and milk!
ReplyDeleteI like brown sugar and lemon juice in mine.
Lemon and sugar is a classic but a uni favourite was peanut butter and chocolate spread!

I didn't even know it was Pancake Day until about 4 hours ago. Sugar and lemon every time!
ReplyDeleteMmmmm, well like you I love the classic combo of lemon and sugar best of all. But maybe a little dollop of clotted cream on the side too, yum! :)
ReplyDeleteCan't beat classic lemon and sugar but I also love blackcurrant jam on mine! Yum!
ReplyDeleteI love strawberries and cream rolled up inside a pancake but strawberries are only good when they're fresh and in season so obviously wouldn't work in February! We filled the pancakes with ice cream and then drizzled with coffee Baileys last year which was absolutely delicious.
ReplyDeleteLemon and sugar! I'm planning eating them all day tomorrow! Perfect day off :-)
ReplyDeleteI always have sugar and lemon juice on mine.
ReplyDeleteDelicious! Pre-made pancake mix has to be the worst kind of cheat xx
ReplyDeleteSugar and fresh squeezed lemon is always the best. I have been stupidly giddy about making pancakes all day and must admit the fun of making them is all part of the day! And yes they were GOOD!
ReplyDeleteLove your Tala measuring cup also xxx

I would always go for lemon & sugar first...but I recently discovered Nutella & banana which was seriously good. And for a savoury meal pancake: chopped leeks, fried with bacon bits, then with a sharp cheddar grated over and a dollop of creme fraiche. A grind of black pepper, plop on the pancakes, roll and eat. That's quite nice too...
