It's A Shoe Zoo Out There

Thursday, 25 April 2013

It's on days like this that I realise what a giant moron I am at times. I had utterly forgotten that I even bought these amazing shoes.  Who does that? How is it even possible??* They are actual #wardrobezoo SHOES!

* Answer = Me. Because I am messy and disorganised and can't get anywhere near the shoe wardrobe.

Giraffes and elephants and ostriches. Oh my!  They are so brilliant and super fun - I was clacking around in them all day and thoroughly enjoying myself. If I had any dancing ability whatsoever then I'm sure I would have launched into an impromptu tap routine to fully express my sense of new-shoe-joy.  Ok, so I'm not entirely sure they'll be comfy enough to wear without tights underneath due to the slightly low vamp but I am in mild despair about it ever being warm enough to go bare legged again, so that's fine and dandy.

Only mild despair. After all, I've still got loads of lovely winter coats to wear. When they're this cute, it seems a crying shame to have to stash them at the back of a cupboard for six months. I want to wear them and spin around going "wheeeeeee!" at the loveliness of the Puritan collar.

Like I said, I'm a bit of a moron at times. Perhaps the confectionery nature of my shirt is giving me a sugar rush or something.

Positivity

Monday, 18 February 2013

I don't usually do the whole giving-things-up-for-Lent thing. I'm not particularly religious so it doesn't seem vital to me and I already know full well that I'm capable of denying myself nice food. I did it for sodding ages when I was losing weight. The next 35 days or so won't see me giving up anything physical. Instead (and I'm trying not to sound too wanky and self-help guide here), I'm trying to give up being negative about myself.

It's hard.

For starters I'm English, therefore genetically incapable of being positive about myself without feeling immensely awkward. When it gets to annual PDR time at work I'm generally found gnashing my teeth and trying to think of inventive ways to describe what I've done over the course of the year without sounding like an egomaniac. And I am good at my job: I really am. If I was American I'd be whooping and "way to go Alex"-ing myself. But I'm not, so I don't.

I'm quite horrible to myself a lot of the time, especially when it comes to my appearance. I take about 90 photos everytime I do an outfit post - thank goodness for the multishot setting. I am harsh when I go through them to select which ones to edit and use. I reckon if I bit the bullet and used most of the ones I discard for making me look too fat/treble-chinned/just plain weird, you probably wouldn't see what I see. You'd just see Alex wearing some clothes in front of a brick wall, looking much the same as normal . I would never read someone else's blog and think "god, she looks terrible in those photos", yet I do it to myself with 90% of the pictures I take.

My default mode in outfit photos is always to stare at the floor and try and disguise the worst points about myself but this isn't possible when you rope in a family member to take photos and they're all "Look at the camera!" "Stop looking at the floor!" "Stop looking grumpy!" "Smile!" "Say sausages!"

So how do I word this without sounding negative? Um. I am not particularly fond of how I look in these photos.  But I do absolutely adore this new coat and it deserves to be shown off, so I shall show it off. It was quite a discovery. We used to have a Vero Moda in Liverpool but I think it's gone now.  I never shopped there much anyway so it's not a brand I tend to remember to look at online.  Equally I didn't expect to find it stocked at Spartoo: I associate them with shoes, not clothes! I came across it during an idle lunchtime browse and had to have it.

The Peter Pan collar is dead. Long live the Puritan collar!

It's such nice quality - lovely, warm material that makes it perfect for that spring weather when you don't want to bundle up in an ankle length winter coat but need something a bit more substantial than a summer jacket.  I like it when a piece of clothing makes you feel happier.

Here's to positivity and smiling more.

It's not a Sound of Music reference. Just little things about today's outfit that make me smile:

New lippy. MAC Creme Cup to be exact.

Best Foot Forward

Wednesday, 9 January 2013

I like being short.  Which is good, because there's no getting around the fact that I'm never going to be any taller than 5'2.  But I also like whacking on a pair of massive heels and being normal sized every now and then, even if it is only a temporary measure.  And with this fine pair of boots waiting for me under the Christmas tree, normal height is now achievable!  Hurrah for Char and her wonderful present buying ways!

Aren't they amazing?  And surprisingly comfy and easy to walk in, cos the heel isn't that high really.  I'm much more stable in these than I ever would be in a pair of normal heels.  They may never leave my feet...

Cake, Glorious Cake

What's lurking behind the brolly?

Me of course! And my amazing cake print shirt.

I really wasn't meant to be buying anything new this month as the budget has been heavily clobbered by booking theatre and ballet and trains and hotels and holidays and suchlike - all will be amazing, I'm sure, but it has left me el skinto in the meantime.

However Char pointed this out to me during one of our regular email sessions - they go along the line of "Ooh I like this" "Me too! And THIS!" Honestly, we are as predictable as two very predictable people who like shoes and frocks and #wardrobezoo themed things.  I was still pondering it when I saw Sarah wearing it at the Brum bloggers meetup earlier in the month (and looking amazing) so that made my mind up.  I had to own it. T'wasn't so very expensive after all. Look, it's still in the sale!

It's got party rings on it for goodness sake.  Why would you not want to own it?!

Red, White and Ooooh

Saturday, 9 June 2012

Do you ever think to yourself "Oh I've got loads of shoes/accessories/cardigans"?  I do it all the time, mostly when struggling to cram things into my annoyingly small wardrobe.  Yet when it comes down to it, it doesn't mean I actually vary my style choices that much.

Perhaps it's because of storage issues or because I'm terrible at doing the ironing but I often stick to the same cardi for several different outfits, or will wear one set of earrings or necklace for about two weeks in a row.  I don't even notice I'm doing it until I actually put two sets of outfit photos together like I have here.  Both outfits were worn over the Jubilee weekend (I know, I know, I am late at posting the pictures.  Don't all hit me with your discarded bunting) and are on the red, white and blue side of things,  so perhaps that's another reason why.  After all, even I don't need more than one pair of red Mary Janes.

What I do need is pretty much every sort of leg and foot related accessory that M&S Limited Collection are producing at the moment.  Check out the socks.

I know they're not odd but I believe I've already mentioned at some point that knee high socks are the exception to the Odd Sock Law.

And the tights!  Ooooh, aren't they just amazing?!

Too, too tempting.  Perhaps I can make room in my tights suitcase and sock drawer just for a few more... After all, I don't think I've ever said "Oh I've got too many tights."

A Little Bit of Vintage Shopping

Tuesday, 11 October 2011

Oh vintage fairs, how I enjoy thee. I adore tracking down a bargain in a charity shop or a car boot sale but sometimes it's nice to be lazy and have lots of goodies all lined up for you to drool over.

The Affordable Vintage Fair finally came back to Liverpool - hurrah! Apparently Chloe Sevigny was there but I don't think I'd have recognised her even if she was wearing a big name badge and came and introduced herself so hey ho.

Do forgive the haul post that's coming up. I have no brainpower left for proper words.

I bought a big red suitcase to add to my stack of cases.

Also a lovely leather briefcase which will do me very nicely until I manage to rustle up the cash for an (extortionately priced) doctors or Gladstone bag.

A pure wool jacket all the way from Salzburg.

From the same stall, this cherrytastic dress. Gosh my mother can be scathing sometimes. I showed it to her and she summed it up in one simple sentence. "Well it's a bit loud." Yes, yes it is. Hence why I like it.

Char and I purchased this timeshare shirt. Whacky, isn't it? We chuffing love it though and we were running out of dosh by this point so we pooled our resources and bought it.

And what did I wear to said vintage fair? Well, nothing that was actually vintage, save for the handbag:

Dress - New Life
Cardi - Gap sale
Shoes - Irregular Choice via ebay

Not that these are in any way, shape or form vintage, but I took the photo so thought I may as well include it... some Primark tights and knee high socks that were also purchased this weekend following a quick shopping trip after cheering on my brother in the Liverpool marathon. He is amazing.
