Storage

Sunday, 6 November 2011

Ok, not the most fun concept in the world, I must admit. But I'm one of those weirdos who gets a great sense of satisfaction from putting things away. Probably because I don't do it that often so it's all a bit Mary Poppins-ish to me. My preferred superpower would definitely be the ability to click my fingers and have things snap back into place. Until the wonderful day that happens, I'll just have to do it all by hand.

Yesterday was spent getting the bedroom back into shape. I've been a complete slattern whilst I've been writing so it was in a right state. Amongst the many things that needed sorting out were my suitcases. I love these cases. Pretty and practical.

This is my tights case. Now A Thrifty Mrs, guru of all things organisational and thrifty, has recently written a very good post about organising your drawers but I am not that good. I can organise the heck out of my tights though. No more rummaging through a drawer desperately hunting for the right colour and getting them all tangled together. Not for me.

I roll them, stash them, and this way I can see exactly what colours I've got. Patterned dark tights lie flat on the right hand side because frankly, rolling them is a waste of time. They just look black and you can't see the patterns.

(Most of the coloured tights are from Dorothy Perkins. Their 80 denier tights are wonderful. Loads of different shades and they are practically impossible to ruin. Keep your eyes peeled in the sale too - you can often get them for 50p or £1)

As for the other cases, they hold:

Gloves and woolly hats.

Summer clothes that get packed away so I've actually got space in my wardrobe for all my winter clobber.

And old clothes that I can't bring myself to throw away. That black thing with the blue beaded fringing? I used to go clubbing in that when I was 17. Look at the size of it!

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to dust the bookshelves. I may be some time...

  2. This is a great way to store tights, I hate it when they get all jumbled up and I can't work out which are which. I'm after some coloured tights so thanks for the Dorothy Perkins recommendation! x

  4. That belt in the last picture! I'm sure I had something very similar circa 2002!
The tights storage is a great idea. Mine are in carrier bags in my wardrobe lol

  5. I love the greens and blues in your tights suitcase. There's something very satisfying about organising colourful/patterned tights. I did mine a couple of months ago and surprisingly they're still fairly neat!

  6. Wow I am so envious of your storage, the cases are beautiful and each one has a different story to tell. I totally have a stash of 'nostalgic' clothes, infact I have a pair of hotpants that I wore on my 18th bday, and cannot find it in my heart to part with them. Alice xxx

  8. Ooh I love the tights idea, mine are all stuffed in a drawer and I'm always ending up with one leg longer when pulling them out :/
I had a top with those beady tassels when I was a similar age!

  9. Your tights look fab like that, you've given me an idea there!

I have a couple of clubbing outfits still that I can only marvel at how tiny they are, both in length and size *sigh*

  10. Since I moved to a smaller place last year, I've become somewhat obsessed with storage. Your vintage cases are a great idea.

  11. Look at your tights! I'm totally going to go and roll my tights up right now - sadly the drawer will have to do as I have no pretty suitcases :( And ... is that a ... top...? It's tiny! I had a fair few backless items myself, worn with super-flared jeans and Converse to the indie discos - I don't think I went out dancing in a pair of heels and a dress til I was about 24! :D xxx

  12. Great idea, storage may not exactly be FUN but you've made it look beautiful! Thanks for the DP tights tip, they will go on my Christmas list!
I so need a sort out and a put-away session (well, marathon really) so I'm hoping you've inspired me to get on with it and stop procrastinating (a top skill of mine!) xx

  21. This post is perfectly timed... I have been storing my tights in a draw string bag as I'm convinced my drawers will splinter and ladder them - but this means I can't see them and have to empty the bag every time, so is a fab idea! I've also picked up some wicker picnic baskets recently to use as storage on wardrobe tops. They look really cute.

  22. Aah, it all makes sense now, first Mrs T and now you have made me see the light. My tights are stored in a hat box, so I got the pretty storage part right - but they basically look like a nest of vipers when I take the lid off! Roll, roll, roll. Got it. Thanks for the Dorothy P tip too - I don't go in there much usually.

I have just organised my earrings though - it's my new favourite thing.

  23. One day I will have my own gorgeous suitcases to store things in, mine are in rather unglamourous crates!
