Itchy Feet

Tuesday 15 March 2011

Not literally.

I just want to be on holiday. I feel like I'm lacking mojo at the moment. It isn't too long till my annual family Easter jaunt and frankly it can't come soon enough. We've been all over the country in previous years but we're going to Kent this time and having a seaside holiday. Must pack a bucket and spade... I'll be finished with the book ban by then so it'll be charity shops and bookshops ahoy, with lots of days out to castles and historic houses. It's our idea of bliss.

Despite the fact that I won't be taking my usual European city break until September/October, I am starting to ponder where I want to go. Over the past few years I've been to:

Dubrovnik

Bruges

Florence

Pisa

Barcelona

I absolutely loved them all. Florence was probably my least favourite because it lashed down with rain most of the time we were there and it was full of giant groups of bored teenagers on school trips getting in the way and being annoyingly teenagerish, but I still had a whale of a time.

I don't want to ruin the record by picking somewhere rubbish this year. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'd quite like somewhere closeish to a beach so we can have one day sunbathing but mainly I just like to explore the history and the winding streets and sit drinking coffee and wine and people watching.

(pics found at random online. All my photos are trapped on a password protected hard drive which I've forgotten the password to. Doom.)

  1. I really want to go to Dubrovnik and Bruges. During summer 2009 I went inter railing all over Europe. Barcelona, Berlin and FLORENCE were my favourite places. Copenhagen is amazing, as is Vienna, anywhere in Italy, South of France, Slovenia and Greece. I really want to go to Istanbul as well =)

  2. Gorgeous pics. I could REALLY do with a holiday too. Lisbon's good for a city break as it has a castle and lots of interesting back streets to explore, but has lovely seaside resorts all along the coastline - great train service so they're easily accessible.

Nice is also good as you can get the train along to Cannes and Monte Carlo.

Paris is my fave place ever - they do a Paris Plage thing on the banks of the Seine every summer so that could be a makeshift beach day!

    xx

PS Thanks for comment. Have abandoned the pink trousers search - decided they're a bit too Barbie for me!

  3. I'm very jealous of you Northern Hemisphere bloggers! So close to everything. I love Berlin myself - or what about the Amalfi Coast?

  4. Wow. You have been to some fab places.

Paris was my favourite along with Venice and Rome.

I want to try and get to Barcelona this year. Hubby is desperate to go. Also back to France due to cheap euro tunnel tickets.

  5. Malta! There's beaches, history by the bucketload (Knights of St John, the George Cross connection, prehistoric ruins and Roman remains), when you get bored you can hop on a ferry to Gozo, Comino or even Sicily plus the Maltese absolutely love the Brits. xxx

  7. San Sebastian, North West Spain, just over the border from France and part of the Basque country, history, culture, fab beaches, the birthplace of tapas, gastronomical capitol of Spain and not overrun with tourists.

  9. Did someone mention a vacation?
I just got off Spring Break (I'm in grad school -- not a little high schooler or anything like that -- no offense to high schoolers), and I feel like I could use another vacation because mine was so full of work.
    LAME.
    Let's run away together.

  11. It sounds like you are really well travelled Alex, I would love to visit some of the places you have already been- Barcelona in particular.

I am longing to visit Paris if not this year maybe the next, it's good to get away for a while isn't it, to a place that takes you almost to a completely different world, there's such inspiration to be sought x

  13. I'd love a holiday too, it has been ages since I've been anywhere other than Scotland. No beach, but I can highly reccommend Tallinn. One of the nicest European cities I've visited xx

  15. My lovely man took me to Rome last summer for my 30th, it was one of my most favourite European cities. Obviously summer is super hot but great place for exploring and people watching.

My dad and step family live in Warsaw which is always nice in the summer - again, lots of history and stuff to see. Beach is a train ride away.

    Southern France is lush.

The possibilities are endless - I'm excited for you :)

  16. Argh - you've started my feet off now!! Never been to Bruges or Dubrovnik but both are high up on my list. Make sure you give Florence another go - it's absolutely beautiful, but I know what you mean, the same happened to me in Paris.

I second the above comment about Lisbon, has such a lovely atmosphere, Malta too is very interesting. Other places I've been and loved are Rome, Prague and Andalucia (Seville/Granada) - none of them have a beach though...

  17. Easter in Kent sounds lovely. My husband and I used to go camping at Easter and it was lovely! I'm jealous! I've never been to any European cities. All of these places look great but I guess cost a fair bit. No suggestions I'm afraid, but I request you pack me in your suitcase so I can tag along :)

  19. You lucky thing you've been to some gorgeous places! I'm off to Glasgow in a few weeks, followed by Paris in July I hope! I had hoped to venture out the country for my first trip (& I suppose I still am technically) but I'm just too poor at the moment :( Copenhagen & Helsinki are on my list for future visits & my little brother lives in Berlin so I've got to get over there at some point soon. Why not try a German city? I've never been anywhere in Germany, but from what I hear Berlin & Hamburg are fab :)

  23. Oh, gotta love Florence! One of my favorite places in the world is Stuttgart, Germany. I went there a few times as a kid, and there's just so many great memories there. :)

  24. Kent will be great. It's such a nice area and as you say there is so much to see and do. You've been to some beautiful places. I loved Bruges, it's just stunning.
My recommendations would be Paris (of course I'd say that) but I know it's not for everyone.
Salzburg is also a wonderful place to visit and there are a lot of places you can travel quite easily to other areas if Salzburg is your base.

  25. Is it bad that I'm counting the days until my holiday... in June? Oh well, 89....

I sincerely recommend Valencia. I did 5 months there as a student, but loads of history, art, buildings and good weather, and you can get the tram out to the port and the beach. A great city to visit and great fun.

  26. Great post lovely! I know what you mean about just wanting to go on holiday, i've got 4 holidays in the summer to Faliraki, Zante, Plymouth and Turkey, and i swear Summer is coming around so slowly because this year im majorly excited - typical!

Barcelona looks lovely and has always been soemwhere i've wanted to visit, theres just something about it which i've always been drawn too. The photo of Dubrovonik looks fab too! xx

  28. I have no holiday planned yet at all! Some of my favourite European cities include Budapest (maybe favouritest of the lot- no beach but the Danube is there and loads of spas to relax in and the architecture is gorgeous), Prague, Split and Seville.

  29. Dearest Alex, you've been to lots of places I'd recommend but I loved Sicily, the Amalfi coast is gorgeous but pricey. I really want to go to Croatia it looks beautiful.

I know how you feel, I am dying for a holiday too. Have to wait for The Actor to finish filming then we can go mid June.

My friends have an old place in the South of France in Pomerols which I think you'd like, the beaches are great but it's a ten minute drive. What dates did you want to go?

I've posted a picture of the hideous MBT's for you! Love, C xx
