Sock It

Friday 2 September 2011

The perils of being short, part 93458893475. Short legs. Short, stumpy legs.

Now you lot are all very lovely and often make encouraging comments about how nice my legs are. But it's all a TRICK. A trick, I tell thee! I only ever get those comments when I have dark tights and high heels on. (It totally works, try it) They are no good without tights and heels. Chunky calves, plump knees, jiggly thighs - I have them all.

But feck it. Can't wear tights all the time, can I? I have always had a secret longing for knee high socks. Plus lots of bloggers totally rock knee highs and they always make me feel very jealous. Vicki always looks amazing in them, Kat has just got some beautiful new ones and A Thrifty Mrs had me wanting to nab her entire outfit when she wore some earlier in the week. Sarah (who suffers from similar leg issues to me) is even running a giveaway on this very theme. I am very prone to banging on in comments about how much I love certain things on other people but how I can't actually wear them myself.

No more.

Out came the knee highs from the depths of my sock drawer.

If people don't like my fat knees then they can sod off. I LOVE this outfit.

Dress - Uttam London, Dorothy Perkins sale
Cardi, socks and shoes - Primark

ps - I know the socks are not odd. Much as I can't bear matching normal socks, knee highs are the exception to the rule. Odd ones would be a bit too, well, clown-like...

  1. Good on ya gal. Maybe I should follow suit cos I HATE my legs. I am full of thread veins (resembling the London Underground map) since having sproglets and always worry my dress may blow up and reveal VERY big, and bad pants.
But you look great and I actually believe everyone looks great when they look confident. Confidence is the key.
Can't believe how much weight you have shed. You've done really well. You definitely got..ahem...socks appeal.

  4. My legs are the same as your's, but being over 50 I don't think knee socks would do it for me!

  5. I agree with Gem, confidence is key and you're rocking these socks! The coordinating hearts get you extra brownie points. Love the cute shoes too!

  6. You totally nailed it, it's definitely about confidence. I love the little hearts on the socks, I had some similar from Topshop but they fell off, typical! xx

  8. I think i agree with you that not matching knee socks would be clowny.

  10. I'm surprised those socks are from Primark :O I want a pair now! I have similar short-ness and leg issues. But really, there's nothing wrong with yours, you rock those socks pretty well! Also, American Apparel do really good knee socks that are great because they don't fall down as you wear them :)

  11. Aww I think you look so pretty! Alas, I share your woes about the short-ness, though. I am a whole 5'2 but I suppose I'm lucky to have longish legs for my height. Yours don't look stumpy at all, though!

  12. I really love the little heart detailing on the socks and the Uttam dress looks wonderful. I’m pretty short too, so know all too well about the obstacles with fashion. You work it Alex and who cares, you look great and feel great xxx

  14. I love your attitude, I am forever saying how much I love other bloggers' styles but can't wear it myself because of xyz...

  16. What a dress - you look lovely and you are properly rocking those knee socks. I will only wear mine with boots - I'm 33, it makes me think of unsuitable school girl fancy dress if I wear them with shoes. I'm not sure why I think this, I think they look fabulous on everybody else.

  17. Hahaha, you funny sweetie!! I love the outfit,it's a bit naughty schoolgirl!!! Tee hee!
Knee highs are fun,I must wear them more! I just have to wear safety pants as well when I wear them,as I am si used to tights I tend to fling my legs around!
Hurrah for your darling knees-sod off yourself for beating them up!
    Love! XXX

  19. Yay for the legs out! I never ever usually have my bare legs out, I'm a shorty too and always feel like my chubby legs look awful. But since starting my blog and taking pics I've found they're nowhere near as bad as I thought!

One day soon I'll be brave enough to try out the knee-highs!

  21. I love those socks! And I think you look fab in them!!! I've tried doing the knee high sock thing this holiday, if I could find the appropriate photo, I'd prove it to you, that they don't seem to work on me!!!!

  22. I love the hearts on the knee highs! I think you should rock the knee highs more often, especially in more outfits inspired by this one :)

  23. Oh Alex, you always make me smile! What a lovely outfit and what area you talking about, fat knees! You silly billy.

Adoring the last shot of you, you look fab. Hope you time in Scotland went well.

  24. I love over the knee socks, but you need to rock them with confidence to pull them off I think. I've never found a pair that didn't fall down and yanking them up every five minutes isn't exactly rocking them! The hunt continues..

  28. Argh I've just read the Thrifty post and now you're at it! I love the knee sock look but just dont have the confidence to try it :S

For the record you don't look short at all in the way you dress, I was actually surprised when I stood next to you because you really don't look it at all (- I hope that comes across as 'You dress well' and not 'oh wow you're really short in real life' - I mean it as a compliment!) xxx

  29. That outfit looks amazing!! And I admire your confidence: I would never show off my dumpy legs without tights or leggings!

  30. I love your attitude! Love it, wear it - brilliant! You know, for my wearing it all challenge I was going to do a post about a few dresses that I love, won't get rid of but can't wear because they are too summery and/or eveningy but sod it - you've inspired me to go ahead a wear them...

  31. And I love this outfit!! I adore wearing knee socks, I really do. Even though my legs are alright, my knees aren't the best bit, but knee socks are one of the few fashiony things that make me think 'sod off' too. You look ace; it's such a good outfit.
