If I Can't Shop, I Can Dream...

Monday 3 February 2014

I'm not shopping for the foreseeable future. Thoughts of house buying are occupying my brain. In between bouts of extreme worrying and wondering whether I'm mad to even be considering buying a house on my own and on my wages (there's a whole other blog post waiting to be written about job/life contentment vs money), I'm researching a whole host of money-related stuff and saving even harder than usual.

It's boring and not fun at all. I'm pretty sure I earn less than most of my friends anyway but seeing them merrily buying nice things and planning all sorts of jolly japes that I have to keep saying no to is kinda upsetting. Can't be helped, and in no way do I begrudge them for it, but it still hurts a bit. Ah, to have a month or two where I could just spend whatever the hell I wanted and not have to worry about what else needs to be sacrificed out of the budget to make it doable.

Thinking positive though.  Bigger picture and all that jazz. I have my budget and there's very little point comparing it to anything else. Ultimately I want a house of my own more than I want the temporary buzz of buying something pretty. Online window shopping is not the same as actually buying things but it's the best I can do right now and it's still kinda fun!

I don't own any Abigails Party heels - the range of colourways have never quite taken my fancy. The pure orangeness of this pair are rather fun though, aren't they? I like the touch of gingham too. And they'd go very nicely with...

Oh Joules, you and your cute jumpers.

You know I love a good frock. This Dresslily dress has a whole lot going on but it caught my eye anyway.

*shakes fist at Liverpool libraries* Why don't you have Fangirl available yet? Whyyyyyy? Hopefully some Amazon vouchers will be due soon and I can treat myself.

  1. I know what you mean about the friends earning more/not begrudging etc but it definitely still hurts though!!

  2. I can totally sympathise! I'm on my fourth month of maternity leave which means my wages have been cut to pretty much nothing, and it only goes downhill from here on. We're having to manage feeding another mouth on less than we've earned before, and whilst it's absolutely possible, it means no luxuries whatsoever for the foreseeable. What does cheer me up though, is seeing how much money I'd previously wasted on things I grew tired of all too quickly. I used to do a big wardrobe clear out every few months for charity and it was pretty scary how little time some things actually spent in my wardrobe before being consigned to the charity bag. It'll all be worth it once you're in your own place though- how exciting!

  3. I've got fangirl on my Kindle and haven't read it yet, need to sort that out. I'm saving for a house too. Move to the Valleys with me and get a nice 3 bed terrace for like £80k :) xx

  4. Oh wow that Joules jumper is amazing - I love it too! I totally get what you mean about wanting to treat yourself more often and not worrying so much about money, it's the same with me. But I still maintain that loving what you do is far more important than everything you could be buying. Also saving now to have your own place is 100% worth it, if you can just handle the stress that is! Hooray for libraries though! xx

  5. That dress is so pretty! And I totally feel you. I know how hard it is trying to save up while our friends are in another level of earning and spending sort of thing. It's revolting, really. Or worse, when you can't dine out with your friend because you don't want to spend money and you're trying to prioritize, and they just don't understand, they just expect you to pay for a dinner they are inviting you to attend! Oh well.

  6. I was the first of my friends to buy my own place and they all thought I was mad/too young. Fast forward 6 or 7 years and they were all moaning that they wished they'd gotten on the housing ladder when I had!!
It is tough not being able to afford treats, but it'll be SO worth it when you get your own place and at least you have lots of lovely clothes and shoes to see you through till then.
