What's That?

Friday, 10 September 2010

A maxi skirt? Yes indeedy. I always thought that at 5'2 I was far too short to get away with one, and, in the fat days, that it would make me look like an actual square. But a little confidence goes a long way and this plain jane of a skirt made its way into my basket on my last trip to Primark. Well, I had to start somewhere and I didn't want to scare myself off with something too vibrant because I'd never have had the guts to wear it. Still feel a bit lumpy in it but definitely more rectangular than square.

I thought I'd team it up with something a bit jazzier though and this rather cheery vintage shirt has been sitting in my wardrobe for a couple of weeks now, just waiting to be worn. The Oxfam shop in Liverpool is great. It's mostly books (yay!) but they have a cracking vintage section and although it's not cheap by charity shop standards, they charge a fraction of the price of the vintage shops over the road. I think this was about £6 or so and it's barely been worn. Had something similar been on sale in a high street store, I'd happily have paid a lot more for it.

One of my colleagues did keep mentioning Adam Ant - I think she was trying to say that I looked a bit 80's? Ah well, I don't mind that. Tis tricky to wear a vintage shirt and not look a bit retro, isn't it?

Shirt - Tulchan via Oxfam shop
Skirt, belt & ring - Primark
Necklace - Accessorize
Pumps - Dorothy Perkins (not convinced they quite go with the rest of it though)
Earrings - genuinely don't remember where they're from; they're ancient

  1. Loving this outfit Alex, you look very good in the maxi skirt. And I think the pumps 'make' the look (though those earrings are terrific!)

  2. I'm only an inch taller than you at 5'3" but I adore maxi's - (Mind you I have hideous calves so maybe it's just that I like to hide them away.) you look lovely in that skirt, it really suits your figure The earings go perfectly with that blouse too. xxx

  6. Maxis are a bit scary I will readily admit, I bought one and then was so terrified of it it lived in my wardrobe until I ultimately found it another home. But still, you rock this one like a pro and because it's so plain black you'll have loads of ways to dress it up jazzy ♥

I like the pumps with it;I always wear some sort of big heel with a maxi as I think I look too squat and booby otherwise! But I'm 5'5",so maybe I'm paranoid?!

  14. I am in fact one of those who fear the maxi, being little over 5’1” I really am not technically made for them.

You PULL it off brilliantly and in a way that is flattering and vibrant, the shirt is to die for, I especially love the detailing on the cuffs, a great Oxfam find. And those earrings remind me of a set of hair bobbles I used to own, square shaped and striped just like that! x

  16. I love it on you, Alex. It looks really slinky and sophisticated. That blouse is vintage pefection and the quality and cut are heaps better than anything the high street has on offer.
Adam and the Ants? Hot guy in his day but can't really see it myself. Maybe the flouncy cuff?
Maxis are just perfect for now, leg coverage without the need for tights. xxx

  20. Hi! I read your comment on Kimberelli's post about people who look like clones and that is sooo true! I've noticed how you see groups of teenage girls who all seem to look the same! Same hair, clothes.. everything. Clones!
So I had to look at your blog and say hello. I love how you're doing your own thing! You stand out in a crowd and that's great! I love the ruffles on your top. :D
