How are you feeling? Quite empowered, thanks for asking.

Wednesday 8 June 2011

I'm very glad I live when I do. As fascinated as I am by history, there's no way I'd want to live there. I don't think I'd have functioned well in a world where the only expectations of me were to get married and have children. Life is pretty good, despite the current sadness.

Things that have rocked about being a modern woman over the past couple of days:

- Filling the car up with petrol. Yes, it's 132.7p a litre (ie fecking extortionate) but it's my car that I paid for myself with my wages.

- Going by myself to the cinema to watch a very blokey sort of film (Senna. Amazingly good). And crying.

- Walking through the city centre by myself at 11pm at night and feeling absolutely safe.

- Thoroughly confusing the man at the library by taking out one book called Goddess of Love (hilarious) and one about folklore and legend in London (très interesting). Who says a girl can't have mixed literary tastes?

- Baking a kick-ass lemon drizzle crunch cake as a present for a friend.

- Doing the sexy photoshoot, just for me, just cos I want to. Shall report back properly in another post when I have the pics back, but it was fantastic.

- Wearing whatever the hell I want. Yesterday was jeans and a cardi, today is:

Think I may take in the side seams on the shorts part - didn't realise how super flarey they were!

Coat - H&M sale
Cardi - Matalan
Playsuit - Next clearance
Shoes - Dorothy Perkins
Necklace - jewellery stall, Dubrovnik
Ring - Primark

And yes, I did regret wearing it about half an hour after I got dressed. Not because of the loo-related issues, but because today has been uber cold and rainy with very brief flashes of sunshine (ie when I got ready this morning). Brrrr!!

  1. What a well-rounded and thoroughly modern young lady you are! I don't think the shorts are too flary I think they're flirty and flouncy and fab! SO glad you enjoyed the shoot, I knew you would - can't wait to hear more about it!

  4. I love your coat soooooooooooooooo sooooooo sooooo much!!!!! Wish I'd managed to find this in H&M! And I agree and say the shorts look lovely the way they are! Beautiful cardie also! Well in fact all of it- the way the red accents in the cardie, necklace and shoes draw out the pinky shades of the flowers!

  5. This weather has been so rubbish hasn't it?! I love your little sailor coat :) I always feel safe in Liverpool city centre, I do love the freedom we have these days. About 40/30 years ago I would probably have been married with 3 kids and no career at this age. I like that we have more choice to do what we want, whether it is to settle down and have a family or to have a career or to travel.

  6. I always wonder how I'd cope if I lived even 100 years ago. My guess is not well... I have a serious internet addiction!

You look fab as always, Alex. Love the playsuit. x

  10. One thing we do share with the ladies of old, going to the loo in some fashions is just hard work! Imagine how they managed in crinolines LOL!

  11. Ooh loving the playsuit, v pretty pattern. They are totally inconvenient tho, not least cause of the faffy weather! :)

  12. Hoorah for you, Alex! I can't wait to see the photos, and I am so glad you enjoyed the shoot. Great outfit, right now I just want to wear red, navy, and black as well. :)

  13. Ooooh! You look picture perfect, Alex! I LOVE the red. It really makes the pattern POP! And I agree. I could never live where my body wasn't my own and its sole purpose to breed children. Blah! Who wants to do that??

  15. When people ask what era I would want to live in I always say now, never have females been so free (and there is still a long way to go!) I love this post and the playsuit. You generally all round rock x

  16. Glad the shoot was such a positive experience! Please do share the deets of the book on London folklore and legends, sounds right up my street. My boyfriend wants to drag me to see Senna so if it's actually worth watching I might not need to be dragged.

  18. Oh yeah! I might love my vintage clothes, car and house but thank god for hip replacements, the pill, living in sin and working from home via the net.
You look gorgeous in that playsuit and I'm thrilled the shoot went well. xxx

  19. I must admit I saw your (very lovely) outfit and thought 'THIS week, she wore that? She must be better with the cold than me!' I got frozen on Monday and once-bitten-twice-shy am in a jumper today!

You are so right. It's interesting how most vintage fans respect history- but most of us are aware of what lacked. And as for the (rare) web-bound obsessive, wishing women were back in the kitchen and ethnicities divided- well, thankfully they are extremely rare and on t'internet so easily 'next blogged'.

  20. I really love this outfit, i think the playsuit looks great with no alterations required, not too flarey at all, but it is a shame about the weather!
I think i may hijack your idea and try and make myself a "things which rock" list. Not so much as a modern woman, just generally!
And I can't wait to hear more details about the photo shoot please :) Xx

  21. Oh you look so lovely and summery and the weather just hasn't been either the last couple of days!

Can't wait to see your photoshoot photos and hear about what it was like :-)

  24. Dearest Alex, what a lovely positive post! The books sound good. You must let me know the title of the folklore one.

I'm over the moon your shoot went well, I knew it would. How brilliant for your confidence. Good on you! Love, C xx

  25. You go girl :) I am so happy you enjoyed the shoot, I knew you would. Even though I love my old crap, I would only ever want to live now. Or in the future, when women might one day be treated truly equally! The playsuit is uber pretty. And you rock :) xx

  26. I love this post :) Being a modern woman IS about contradictions and eventually they won't be contradictions, they will just be the way things are.

  27. I agree with you on the living now. While it's all good and well to soak in the beauty of Austen's books, I'm glad we have internet and takaways :P haha! You look so lovely, I'm sorry you ended up being cold. British weather should just learn to behave in lines of fashionista's desires!

  28. You look fab. Glad the photo shoot went well, can't wait to hear more about it x

  29. Thank you for the encouraging words! I wish I could take your fabulous suggestions (though the pillow idea is certainly on my list for next paycheck), but I'm quite literally in the middle of nowhere! No ikeas or anything like that for hours. Also my friends and family live 2000 miles away. I am craigslisting for immediate essentials and mustering patience on the rest. The good news is that I have plenty of cookware so I'll be well fed :) oh the growing pains of adult life!

  30. A playsuit- me gusta! Maybe with tights thugh, if the weather is as horrendous with you, as it is here. URgh. HATE rain....

Glad to hear the shoot was good, and yes, hell yes I'm glad to be in the 21st century!
