Life Through A Lens

Wednesday 10 August 2011

Two things that I would never seek to change about myself: my height and the fact I wear glasses. Yet people seem to constantly feel that it's ok to comment sarkily upon them. The height thing - yeah, yeah, I'm short, I know that. Really doesn't bother me. But the glasses thing makes me very cross.

I like wearing glasses
.

I always have, even before specs got all cool and hipster. I can barely remember a time when I didn't wear them. I do have very faint memories of having to wear an Elastoplast eye patch in infant school to try and strengthen my lazy eye but I think my brain has suppressed most of the horrors of that.

What I really do hate is people who seem to think that glasses are hideous and that wearing them must make a person dull and unstylish. That sort of person will actually think it's ok to tell me I'd be much prettier if I didn't wear them, or that I will (and this is a direct quote here) "ruin the wedding photos by having glasses on." Did you know that bridesmaids shouldn't wear glasses? No, me either.

When I came across this Hero & Cape tshirt I just had to buy it. It's a little bit of an up yours to all those idiots who like to pass comment about my specs.

T-shirt - Hero & Cape
Shorts & bag - H&M
Shoes - Irregular Choice & Dorothy Perkins
Rings - MerCurios and craft fair.

(I was having a hideous photo day with a great big fat face, so attempted to improve things with changes of shoes and hair. Didn't really work. Oh well.)

Mon amie Chloe also succumbed to the lure of the tshirt so we decided to double post about it. I should probably point out that what you see is not quite what arrived - we both ended up altering it for fit reasons.

The tshirts are lovely quality and great designs but the one slight flaw as far as I'm concerned it that they're unisex fit. I'm not the skinnymalinky type of girl who can pop on her boyfriend's tshirt (well I don't have one, so that would be tricky in itself. Go with me here...) and look stylish. I just look like my tshirt is too big. This one fitted ok in places but the neckline was a bit too high so I chopped it down a bit and edged it and the sleeves with some black ribbon. I may still alter the length and sides a bit but then again I may just leave it as it is - I'm very weird about tshirts and potential cling/muffin top. We shall see.

ps - am not ignoring the riot situation. I've been glued to Twitter and News 24 for the past couple of days and I am livid that idiots are doing this to my city. My brain needs some lightness though. I don't want my blog to be as ranty as my tweets are at the moment.

  1. Glasses really suit you! I can't believe people are rude enough to say that, ruining photos indeed!! Oh god, I had an eye patch when I was about 2 and some family friends still don't let me forget it. I wear contacts mostly but I'm not ashamed of my glasses :) Oh and brill customisation, love the black edging! xx

  2. what does the ring say?
you have done a fab job with the ribbon edging on the tshirt, i have an issue with tshirts like that as well, when i go to gigs i always end up with a boy fit tshirt as i am not a miniature tween, and they never quite look right..

and also, what the actual fuck about the woman who said you would ruin the wedding photos? did you kick her in the face!?

  3. The t-shirt is cool! I don't get what's wrong with glasses at all. How rude of that person. I had bridesmaids at my wedding with glasses (or as I call the hipster thick-plastic-framed-ones 'beakers' - i.e. plastic glasses). I hasten to add that the term beakers originated with a glasses-wearer as a term for her funky placcy frames!

  4. Amazing t-shirt! I love my glasses so much that I actually want to wear them all the time and there's a part of me that's a little bit gutted that I don't have to. I actually think I take a better photo when I have a bit of head gear on.

  5. I've always thought glasses were fabulously attractive, I loved it when Jon needed them and was delighted to require them, too. Any excuse for more metalwork.
Love what you've done to that teeshirt. I'm not a fan of the shape of them but the fabric is great to mess around with. x

  6. Well I'm going to be controversial here, but I hate having bad eyesight! If I won the lottery, laser eye surgery would be top of my chopping lust (chopping lust?! Shopping list! I'm not even typing this on a phone or anything...) It's not how they look, more the fact they slip off my nose, or start to pinch my head after a while, or they steam up or I get finger prints all over them... I wear contacts most of the time but even they get on my nerves! Oh and don't get me started on the EXPENSE, when people are getting GASTRIC BANDS on the NHS!! Grrr!

Ahem, anyway, lovely shoesies and good job on the t-shirt, with the ribbon and everything! :)

  7. I think you look great. I have to wear glasses for reading and writing. I don't mind them, but I have a hard time finding them to suit, I have a tiny head and everything looks too big.
    I love the top!
    and I'm short too :)

  8. I'm in the love my glasses camp too but have never been told that they look silly etc apart from the obvious teasing at secondary school (they were nasty purple ones so maybe I did deserve the teasing!) I love my glasses and even if I could afford laser surgery I wouldn't as my glasses make me, me!

  9. FAB t shirt!! I wear glasses nearly every day, but sadly, I hate mine. I have been wearing them since I was 13 but I just don't suit them; I have a fat round head so I look like a football with specs on! Plus they make me look identical to my dad. AND I hate Specsavers.

@Lucy - Good point about folk getting gastric bands on the NHS!! My eyesight has deteriorated every year since I've got glasses, I fear I'll be blind before 30 at this rate, you'd think the NHS could offer some laser eye surgery!!

  10. I can't believe that someone said glasses would ruin the wedding photos!

That's a great bit of customising you've done with the t-shirt and I love the shoes with the flowers on.

  11. your top is gorgeous! its amazing - im off to check out the store now xx

  12. People really think that glasses spoil a person's looks? That's utterly bonkers. I love glasses - but oddly, I'm not a fan of them on myself - although I do wear them all the time. I suppose I just need to find the right pair (50s cats eye styleee would be good). Anyway, love the t-shirt and how you've customised it. Love those shoes with the red flowers - stunning.

  13. God I adore that tshirt!! And it's so true!!!! I wear contacts the majority of the time but I like you love my glasses. They suit me, change the way I look and are often a talking point too. I just wish they weren't sooo expensive!

    X x

PS lusting after the shoes x

  14. Holy hell, how fucking rude! 'Ruin the wedding photos?'? Seriously? I'd have rethought the whole bridesmaid issue after that. Were I boy - or more sapphically inclined - rest assured I'd totally make a pass at you, you look hot!

    ReplyDelete
  15. I hope whoever voiced that nasty opinion got a very big slap! How rude!`
I too wore one of those pink eye patches along with the lovely pink round NHS frames! Such a good look-NOT!
I don't mind wearing them but now I've hit the taking on/off to be able to read/see where I'm going palaver. I did try varifocals but just kept tripping up! A most perculiar sensation. (Shivers with horror at the recollection!)
Wow- that last photo of you with your hair up...fab-u-lous!
    Z xx

  16. I always hack up t-shirts too, they are quite a personal thing I find. Also what is it when some days no matter what you do you cant get a photo you are happy with. You look great in the all anyway, I think we are all over critical of our own pics x

  17. Excellent tshirt! I dont have much of an issue with my glasses since I found ones I actually liked 2 years ago, but before that it was lenses for like 6 years straight! Actually I'm due new glasses next month and hoping I can just keep these ones to spare the pain of having to find a new pair I actually like... :)

  18. I always wanted to wear glasses, they look so great! Fabulous t-shirt and you look hot in those shorts!

  19. I too love wearing glasses, good job as I have to wear them all the time. You look gorgeous in them. Anyone who makes such stupid comments isn't someone I want to know.
I would've told that ignorant, rude woman to f-off and stick her wedding. Would she have told someone in a wheelchair they couldn't be in the photos?!

  20. Yay, someone else likes that tshirt! I tweeted Hero+Cape telling them how much I was in love with it! I would buy it, but being pregnant, I don't think it'll fit well :(
I may treat myself to it once I've given birth though.
& I must say, gorgeous shoes!

Oh, and that glasses are cool, obviously. I love my glasses, hence why I won't succumb to contact lenses.

    xo

  21. you're lucky that you suit glasses Alex, I have to wear mine for driving and feel like I look a state with them on. My glasses look pretty yet as soon as I out them on things turn sour. Whoever told you to take them off is a total prick to say the least, you look FAB in them.
Adoring your IC shoes, I really want a pair myself one day.
Also - I wear tees for work and I look like a bloke in one, so I have no desire to wear them by choice!

  22. I envy people who suit glasses. I'm meant to wear them all the time but I have an odd hatred of wearing anything on my face!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Oh Alex, good on you for speaking up.
I have many issues with wearing glasses myself, and I guess one of my biggest fears is what will people say/think about me. But I do hope one day I find the courage to wear glasses, as daft as it sounds, I really envy people who do wear them and suit them.
It’s ridiculous that people think it funny and clever to make a snide remark. Glasses work for you and you are not in any way dull Alex x

  24. Ah the dreaded eye patch, I had one of those as a child too! You really suit your glasses, I like that style of frame, can't believe someone said you'd ruin a photo wearing them, what cheek! I must admit that I generally avoid wearing my glasses, not due to vanity, I just find them a nuisance. I hate when they get wet in the rain, steam up with temperature change, when fizzy juice bubbles splatter on them, the dent they leave on your nose. At the moment my sight is good enough to not wear them all the time but I know I'll have to go back to them full time eventually.

  25. Love this outfit, can't beat a bit of red, black & white. I always used to want to wear glasses but now I'm don't cos of the librarian stereotype ;-)

  26. Awesome t-shirt, awesome red lips, awesome shoes, awesome shorts, awesome glasses. I love wearing contacts because I enjoy having all-round vision, but occasionally I do wear my glasses when I want to feel a bit like a literary tomboy (mine are satre style horn rimmed ones) xx

ps thanks for clarification on photo taking at kenwood. Still annoyed me that I couldn't buy postcards even of the rooms though ;)

  27. Assholes! Those who make remarks about glasses AND the idiots ripping up your city.
Love those floral shoes, love your glasses, you totally ROCK as far as I'm concerned!

  28. Fantastic t shirt. I started having to wear glasses in the 20s and I love them.

Whoever said that about bridesmaids is nuts. Weddings make people mental, I'm sure of it

  29. I LOVE this t-shirt! I spotted it too and I'm considering a purchase. It looks fab on you, especially with the shorts and the lippie.

I've worn glasses since age 11 and honestly think I look terrible without them. I used to get the odd comment in school - 'speccy four eyes', very original - but have been quite lucky in that I've never been bullied or seriously teased for wearing glasses. The bridesmaid comment is terrible - glad you proved them wrong! xx

  30. I LOVE what you've done to the t-shirt, it looks so much better! It's a great t-shirt to start with but the edging gives it that, um, edge! :)
I mix between contacts and glasses, I don't mind wearing glasses, but get annoyed with them on my face at times. I got told off for wearing "hipster" glasses by a friend who hadn't realised I wore contacts, the cheek!!

    xx

  31. I've luckily only ever had nice things said about my glasses, I started wearing them from about 19 so I didn't get the childish bullying at least.

That first photo is GREAT, really cool. And The tshirt of course is awesome, I love the way you changed it.

Those glasses I mentioned on twitter turned up today, they're gorgeous, just need to send them off to have my prescription put in and I'll be showing them off on the blog soon!

    xx

  33. Hurrah for you and all your commentees! I am short and wear glasses. They are part of me and my face feels naked without them. Yay, us speccies! xxx ps wonderful shoes xxx

  34. I think you look smashing and I'm so pleased to hear the glasses love.
I wore mine for my wedding, my husband was thrilled as he knows girls with glasses are hot. Love the shorts, shoes and lippy combo.

  35. LOVE the T-shirt - might have to be a copycat! xx

  36. Well, I like being able to wear both glasses and contacts. I have to say, though, no one has ever been brave enough to make disparaging remarks about my glasses (except maybe my little brother, but he doesn't count).

    K xx

  37. I was JUST thinking how cool that ribbon edging was. My word, you are a talented one! And yaaaay for people that are cool and comfy with their differences. I love being pale but seriously the amount of people that used to mention it was ridiculous!!! Oh and I've always wanted to be short. :D Those shoes!!! Argh! So much eye candy in one post. End of comment xoxox

  38. Alex, I think you have a particularly fine pair of glasses (and I LOVE the t-shirt). I wear glasses for computer work and reading and sometimes I feel more stylish, more 'finished' with them on. What a rude indivdual to say you'd ruin the photos. Some people!

  39. Nice t-shirt! I've always loved my specs - I was jealous of my little sister when she got hers, and chuffed when the optician FINALLY said I needed them - I got the most outrageously offensive blue and purple glasses, properly 90s-chic, and have worn descendants of them ever since :)

  40. I used to hate my glasses and made my eyesight worse by not wearing them and having to squint at the board in school. But now I have some nice frames (sort of like yours!) and I've gotten over my old hang-ups. I like glasses too .. probably because I like seeing things properly haha!
