Hmmmm

Tuesday 8 June 2010

I am very drawn to stripes, even though I should probably know better. There's an oft quoted fashion rule about horizontal stripes making you look wider and let's face it, I don't need any help in that department. So although I had my eye on this beautiful cardi from the moment I saw it in the shops, I couldn't bring myself to buy it, despite much urging from various people on different shopping trips. I finally gave in though - well, it was on sale plus 20% off, what was I meant to do?

Strangely enough it's not actually the stripes on the cardi that I've questioned whilst looking at the photos. It's the length. My problem area is stomach/hips/upper thighs (vile jelly belly going on!) and as such I'm quite wary of things that stop at lengths that draw attention to this. I tried to add a bit of length by layering a longer vest top underneath but I'm still not entirely convinced. Any suggestions?

  1. I like your new cardi - it's nice colours :)

I've heard that whole 'horizontal stripes make you look wider/vertical stripes make you look taller & thinner' thing my whole life - but I've got SO many stripy things (horizontally), particularly cardigans & I don't really know if it's true, but I also don't really care!

  2. WEAR IT. Not only do you look fab - have you lost a bit recently? - but fashion is about being bold and wearing what you want. Bollocks to it!

  3. Such a gorgeous cardigan! I don't believe the horizontal stripes rule - I think if it fits you well and the shape suits you, you'll rock it! As you do, so very well.

I often wear longer length vest/tees under jumpers and cardigans - I find a very slim fitting style works best, so you're not adding any bulk to your silhouette. Or you could wear a shorter top tucked into a high waisted skirt or trousers, with a belt? :) x

  4. I had my eye on this cardie too, but spent too much so didn't get it. You look really great in it so don't fret. As a big girl I am often told to say clear of horizontal stripes, but I read recently that horizontal stripes do not actually make you look wider its a modern myth, and I choose to believe that :)

I think the way you're wearing it looks awesome, and is very flattering. My stomach is my problem area, apart from enormous bosoms,so i too avoid those kind of stripes. But some one told me recently it is actually the other way round?Vertical stripes make you lokk wider??Weird,I thought, but seeing you in this cardi.....
I just wear them diagonal, cos I love 'em,and suck it in as best I can!!!

  7. The cardi looks fab, Alex! It's a flattering shape that actually emphasises your trim waist. I'd wear it over a contrasting green floral frock.

  8. The cardi looks fab on you and the layering really works. I have the same problem and that's what I do - don't know if it works as well on me though! Stripes are always a good choice (and possibly the reason I can never find an outfit - everything is stripy!) and I think you should ignore those who say we shouldn't wear them!

  10. I think that cardi would look so cute with a skirt!! I love skirt/cardi combos. Maybe a skirt with clean lines will give you the look you want?

  12. Pah to the rules. It looks lovely on you and is a wonderful fresh colour. I think it looks good with the longline vest underneath and am def with Vix, it would look fab over a floral. x

  14. I watching watching Q.I and Stephen Fry said that the 'horizontal stripes making you look big' thing is a MYTH! they even proved it on the show.
So there you are, if Mr. Fry says it, it must be true.
So you wear that cardigan and continue to look oh so fabulous!!! xxx

  17. You have a fab figure! The green stripes around the waist is very flattering! The longer top underneath is a great way of covering the bits you like less and still showing off the fab cardi!

  19. For me, I need to try on everything striped but it really depends on cut and spacing between lines. There's no auto buy when it comes to stripes, especially when you have a, er, sizeable chest.

BTW I love your favourite authors list! I just finished reading Faro's Daughter for the nth time.
