I hope you had the time of your life

Thursday 17 June 2010

I sometimes feel like a bit of a fraud when it comes to talking about music. The musical talent and interest runs down the male side of my family (my grandad played guitar in a big band, my dad has the most varied musical taste of anyone I know, my brother DJs a bit and runs a club night ) Me? Well I can mostly take it or leave it. I listen to the radio all the time but it's always Radio 5 or sometimes Radio 4, so I never have a clue what's going on in the charts unless a friend sends me some music. Doesn't seem like I'm missing that much to be honest!

But when I do find a band or artist I like, I really like them. They'll tend to be responsible for the albums or songs that come to really mean something in my life, music that instantly defines a certain time or place or emotion.

I don't want to sound all pretentious and be like "oh ya, American Idiot is a really seminal album for me" but there was a lot going on in my life in late 2004. I'd just finished uni, no real idea what to do with my life, parents were splitting up rather traumatically, my cat died, I was busy falling in love. Lots of memories, lots going on, and that album was seemingly always there in the background. I'd always loved Green Day anyway but it just holds a special place in my heart.

I was poor with a capital P when they were touring it though so had no chance of being able to go but snapped up tickets for the latest tour and last night was the night! I can't review it, I'm still not able to coherently talk about the glory that was nearly 3 solid hours worth of Green Day live. Time of my life? I'd say so.

Here's a very good review of it, if you're interested. If not, feast your eyes on beautiful Billie Joe and his guyliner. Swoon. Oh and Ffion and I, pulling funny faces (I blame the cider)

  1. I'm so happy that you got to see them! In 2004 my fave band was Blink 182 and I was devastated that broke up... :D But now they're back together I would love a chance to see them even though I listen to them rarely. I'd call that nostalgia...

Totally know what you mean about really getting into a few particular bands.. I don't know half of whats played on the radio nowadays but my fave Aussie acts give me goosebumps and I can recall every word when they play :D

  2. Is it just a coincidence that you love the color green and the band's name has green in it? lol
Seeing a band live is always soo much fun, I love going to music festivals in the summer!

  4. I'm so glad you enjoyed it. My favourite Green Day album is Dookie, I bought it (on tape. Old alert!) on my first ever trip to California and it always make me think of CA.

    Music is a very powerful thing x x x

  6. Billie Joe. Swoon indeed!!
I love Green Day, have done since my house party teen days. I remember us all singing our hearts out to Basket Case - it came on the radio the other day and I went nuts in my car. Much to the amusement of the fellow traffic jammers. :)

Great post, very jealous, never seen them live.

  9. It looks like you had a wonderful time! =) And I'm so glad that you decided to keep the cardi.
I don't know what Radio 4 or 5 are, but I'm guessing it is something like American NPR... which you will often find me listening to =)

  16. I went to see Green Day at lancashire cricket ground when I was 14, SUCH a great gig! Every now and then I hear old green day songs and reminisce. Oh and did you know they're opening a utility store in liverpool one?! Right across from John Lewis, near the Orange store. I saw it yesterday and actually thought of you after your last blog post!

  18. I am so glad you had such a fantastic time. I can completely empathise with music serenading a particularly poignant time in your life (my bad is an American band called The Stills, I hear that first album and it. Just. Takes. Me. Back.), so I am sure the waiting and saving up was so much more worth it! When you feel composed enough to write about it, I'd love to hear your side of the story :)

Thanks so much for your comment too, I got some really well-considered, varied feedback answers, it seems our blogging community is as diverse as it is huge! :)

  19. I grew up with Green Day. We used to listen to Dookie on repeat and I just LOVED them. Along with Blink, they were my favourite band and I've seen them a few times. They're fantastic live! Glad you had the time of your life! :) x

  21. I went to see them in 2004 (or 2005, maybe? Not sure, it was in Milton Keynes and they were supported by Taking Back Sunday and Jimmy Eat World, and Hard-Fi I think) and got the worst sunburn ever. To the point where mine scarred, and my friend got these pus-filled... things on her shoulders that looked like cod liver oil capsules. So now I connect Green Day with sunburn.

I don't really listen to them any more, apart from Church on Sunday. It's sweet, and despite compromise being such a big part of real life relationships you rarely hear it being mentioned in songs.
